What is Nursing?

Nursing is a profession focused on caring for individuals, families, and communities so they may attain, maintain, or recover optimal health and quality of life.

According to the International Council of Nurses (ICN), nursing encompasses health promotion, disease prevention, and the care of physically ill, mentally ill, and disabled people of all ages in all health care and other community settings. It also includes advocacy, the promotion of a safe environment, research, shaping health policy, patient and health systems management, and education.

In the 21st century, nurses serve as the key link throughout a patient’s health care journey. Across the entire patient experience and wherever care is needed, nurses work tirelessly to identify and protect the needs of individuals.

Nursing plays a vital role in health care. The World Health Organization has affirmed that the services provided by nurses are one of the pillars of the health care system.

Career Prospects

Career Prospects

According to the United Nations, the global population is projected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050, leading to an increased demand for health care services. Nursing has been listed by Entrepreneur (USA) as one of the top 10 emerging and critical career fields worldwide.

In Vietnam, the demand for nurses remains high. The Ministry of Health reports that Vietnam currently has the lowest nurse-to-doctor ratio in Southeast Asia. While the World Health Organization recommends 4 nurses per doctor, Vietnam only averages 1.5. This shortfall is especially concerning as the population ages and life expectancy increases, creating greater health care needs.

Graduates of the Nursing program at Yersin University of Da Lat can take on the following roles:

  • Nurses at public and private medical facilities (including hospitals, clinics, and health care centers at the central, provincial, and local levels);
  • Educators and trainers at medical colleges and universities; researchers in medical institutes; staff at health education and nursing organizations;
  • Founders and managers of health care facilities; head nurses in hospitals involved in care management and health policy development;
  • International nursing roles that match employer requirements abroad.
  • Graduates can also pursue higher education, such as a Master’s or Doctorate in Nursing, or specialize further in fields like Public Health or Hospital Administration.
