What is Japanese Studies?

Japanese Studies is a specialization under the Oriental Studies major, focusing on the social sciences and humanities related to Japan. The program explores various aspects of Japan, including its language, geography, history, culture, society, economy, and politics, as well as its international relations, particularly with Vietnam and other countries in the region.

Japan is one of the world’s most developed countries in terms of economy and science–technology, ranking second globally. As a result, Japanese has become a popular international language, especially in Asia, including Vietnam.

Yersin University aims to train Japanese Studies graduates with a systematic, comprehensive, and in-depth understanding of Japan in areas such as geography, culture, society, economy, politics, and international relations. Graduates can pursue Master’s or Doctoral degrees in Oriental Studies or related fields like Asian Studies and Area Studies at universities both in Vietnam and abroad.

In addition, students will acquire essential skills for working in an international environment, including IT application skills, teamwork, negotiation, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Special emphasis is placed on fostering professional conduct, communication, and appropriate working attitudes when engaging with Japanese partners across all sectors.

  • Translation/interpretation, tourism guidance, and teaching Japanese at language centers, schools, and universities.

Curriculum

The program consists of five knowledge groups: General Education, Foundational Knowledge, Japanese Studies Core Knowledge, Supplementary Knowledge, and Graduation Requirements.

The Japanese Studies component emphasizes various disciplines related to Japan—geography, history, culture, economics, politics, and international relations—along with comprehensive training in Japanese language skills (Listening – Speaking – Reading – Writing) from beginner to advanced levels.
