What is Semiconductor Technology?

Semiconductor Technology is a specialized field within the Mechatronics Engineering program at YersinUni.

 

It is the industry that manufactures electronic devices, computers, and mobile devices using semiconductors. Microchips and circuits are produced from semiconductors, which have electrical conductivity levels between conductors and insulators.

The semiconductor industry includes the following key areas:

  • Microchip Design: Planning and creating microchips with specific sizes and functions.
  • Semiconductor Manufacturing: Producing microchips on semiconductor wafers using advanced processes such as photolithography and ion etching.
  • Quality Assurance Testing: Ensuring the quality and performance of semiconductor products before distribution.
  • Semiconductor Packaging: Protecting microchips from environmental factors and enabling connections with other devices.

Vietnam’s semiconductor industry is demonstrating strong growth potential within the global semiconductor supply chain. According to a Boston study, the global semiconductor industry grew at an average annual rate of 13% between 2001 and 2021, reaching a market size of $600 billion. The industry is expected to continue expanding and reach $1 trillion by 2030.

Currently, major economies such as the U.S., China, the EU, South Korea, and Japan have announced subsidy plans for semiconductor manufacturing, intensifying competition in the global technology sector.

As the semiconductor industry grows, the demand for a skilled workforce increases. The Vietnamese government has tasked the Ministry of Planning and Investment, in collaboration with the Ministry of Information and Communications, the Ministry of Education and Training, and other agencies, with developing a plan to train 50,000 semiconductor professionals by 2030.

According to economic experts, the semiconductor industry in Vietnam will require approximately 20,000 professionals in the next five years and around 50,000 in the next decade, with qualifications at the university level and higher. This highlights the vast potential for semiconductor industry development in Vietnam.
